Scripture Is Our Foundation

by | 0 comments

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. – 2 Timothy 3:16-17

In 2017 we marked the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. One of the main cries of the reformers was “Sola Scriptura”, which holds that the Christian Bible is sufficient and authoritative in all matters. Every truth necessary for salvation and spiritual life is dealt with in scripture, whether explicitly or implicitly.

This, of course, is not to say that the scripture addresses every specific issue. For example, the Bible offers us little or no insight on matters such as aviation, Asian cuisine, or ice hockey. What we do know is that the Scriptures are “more sure” (as Peter put it) than what we have observed with our senses, and that the Bible is the highest authority on any matter it does address.

This isn’t just a question of sound theological Christian doctrine. This is a practical truth we must apply to everyday life.

When Jesus was being tempted in the wilderness by the devil, His response to every advance of the enemy began with “It is written”. In fact, this phrase is used dozens of times throughout the New Testament, which underlines its importance. The word of God is sufficient and authoritative not only for instructing us, but for turning back the advances of the enemy. As we seek to break out of false beliefs and push forward into God’s destiny for us, we must always be anchored in Scripture. We must have “it is written” at the foundation of it all.

Wisdom and personal revelation have their place. Tradition has its place. Marketing strategies and management techniques have their places as well. But never should they be elevated above the place of Scripture. Jesus had to constantly rebuke the religious leaders of the day for placing their own ideas and traditions on par with the word of God.

As we contend for renaissance and reformation in our day, let us allow Scripture to be the basis of everything we say and all we do. Let us allow “It is written” to be sufficient. Let us have a heart like David, who said that the Law of the Lord is perfect, sure, enlightening, enduring forever, altogether righteous, and more precious than gold (Psalm 19). Let’s allow the word of God that does not return void to do its work in and through us.
